Background
Based on experiences, it is evident that in youth exchanges (YE) project promoters often see intercultural learning (ICL) happening through performance of national songs and dances, traditional food and beverages or just through the fact that people from different cultures meet and take part in common activities… Nevertheless, we believe that this is only the tiniest tip of what the YiA programme has to offer to participants when it comes to ICL as an interactive learning process – an exciting trip full of adventures and wonders to be discovered once you decide to go for it!
Yet indeed, sometimes it feels that “Intercultural learning is to European youth work what world peace is to the Miss World Competition; everybody is in favour of it and says nice things about it” (Titley 2009, 62). There exist probably as many definitions of “intercultural learning” as there are of “culture” itself and numbers of projects and training courses are being organised on topic of ICL. With the current training course, Estonian NA would like to focus on young people and their better understanding about ICL concept: what it is, what it is not; what we can learn through it and how to facilitate ICL in YiA projects.
Aims & objectives
“ICL adventure” training course is aimed to create a spirit of a “mini-youth-exchange” by bringing together motivated young people and youth leaders to
- critically reflect upon how do we actually understand ICL,
- point out the potentials and challenges of ICL,
- share experience and get inspiration for good youth projects,
- work out innovative and creative ways to use non-formal learning, more specifically YiA projects as a good tool to practice ICL.
Participants
As we would like to base reflections also on personal experiences of participants, the TC is open for young people and youth leaders (aged 18-30), who previously took part in or organised at least one international Youth Exchange and are interested in the ICL topic and motivated to develop new youth projects. The training course will involve about 25-30 participants from YiA Programme Countries.
